Marlborough town’s motto is ubi nunc sapientis ossa Merlini – “where now are the bones of wise Merlin” – and legend has it that the 62ft high mound in Marlborough College is the burial site of Merlin. Steeped in ancient lore and legend Marlborough is the perfect location for Giffords Circus to magically appear each summer in the heart of rolling Wiltshire hills and white horses.
“Something about the circus stirs their souls, and they ache for it when it is absent. ”Erin Morgenstern

Delve into Marlborough's history
The Merchant’s House is a Grade II structure located in the centre of Marlborough’s historic High Street. It was largely rebuilt in 1653-56 by a wealthy silk merchant, Thomas Bayly, following the catastrophic fire in 1653 that destroyed the majority of the medieval and tudor town, and was improved and extended until 1700.
Our favourite Marlborough restaurant
